Sonic Sunset was recorded at Ultra Sonic Recording Studios in Hempstead, New York on March 13, 1973, during a live radio broadcast by WLIR-FM, a station which was in Garden City, Long Island. As with both of Parsons' solo studio albums, GP and Grievous Angel, the then unknown Emmylou Harris provides the prominent duet and harmonising vocals. She was discovered by Gram Parsons, who influenced her country rock direction, and she went on to become one of the leading music artists behind the country rock genre in the 1970s and the Americana genre in the 1990s. The band, however, was a different line up than that which appeared on Parsons' two solo records.
As Parsons and Harris prepared to tour the United States in 1973 to promote his solo debut, most of the band who performed on the album had prior commitments to Elvis Presley's TCB Band. Parsons instead assembled a crew of roadhouse pickers which he dubbed 'The Fallen Angels'.
