Jay Chattaway got his start arranging charts for Maynard Ferguson’s Orchestra before becoming a go-to composer for ‘80s genre pictures, a career path that eventually led him to the musical captain’s chair of various Star Trek TV series and movies. 1985’s Silver Bullet—one of the great werewolf pictures in a decade full of ‘em (e.g. American Werewolf in London)—came early in his odyssey, but he was already deftly blending orchestral and electronic timbres with some unexpected flourishes, like the classical guitar on “Looking for Mr. One-Eye.” For the first-ever vinyl reissue of the soundtrack, we’ve accessed superior sound sources, updated the cover art, and pressed it in scarlet and gray “silver bullet” vinyl to match both the souped-up wheelchair of paraplegic protagonist Marty and the projectile that finally does the beast in.
