The Afterlife was first released as a CD on Buried Treasure in early 2024. Utilising an array of vintage instruments, Swedish producer and multi-instrumentalist, Retep Polo a.k.a. Peter Olof Fransson, conjures layered, avant-garde yet deceptively melodic chorales and dream-like mantras soaked in waves of 1960's psychedelia with fuzz guitars, pastoral acoustics, buzzing synths and hypnotic percussion. Featuring the magisterial, sage-like presence of Dorothy Moskowitz (The United States Of America) who contributes voices, words and additional music, plus Emily Brown Soldberg, Svante Sjostedt & Dorothy's grandson, Hudson "Boom" Persson, together they create an album rich in arcane sound, eery mysticism and urgent prophecy. Fans of late 1960's psychedelia, early 1970's experimental rock and eco-conceptual electronics will find much to savour amongst the 11 tracks on this new and finely crafted, vinyl edition.
Dorothy has explored similar themes throughout her remarkable career, notably on the 1968 The United States of America album - an enduring psych classic and major influence on artists such as Broadcast, Stereolab & Portishead. With Peter's meticulous production bringing things full-circle yet sharply up to date, the album inhabits a sonic world comparable to White Noise, Mort Garson, Alessandro Alessandroni, Alain Goraguer, Franco Battiato, Maria Monti and Francois de Roubaix.
The Afterlife is a profound, moving paean to nature's self-regulating cycles and our fragile planet. Listen to the promo & watch the animation below to judge for yourself.
