The Kilograms, a newly formed supergroup, bring together seasoned musicians from the punk, ska, and reggae scenes for a compelling debut 2-song 7 release on Rad Girlfriend Records. The band features Joe Gittleman, best known as the bassist for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, a band that played a pivotal role in popularizing ska-punk in the 1990s. Gittleman's deep roots in ska are a driving force in The Kilograms' sound. Joining him is Michael McDermott, the drummer for The Bouncing Souls, a band that has been a staple of the punk rock scene since the late 1980s. McDermott's versatile drumming, which spans punk, ska, and even rock (as he also drums for Joan Jett), provides a solid backbone for the band's rhythmic foundation. The Kilograms' lineup also includes Sammy Kay, a singer-songwriter with a rich history in the ska and reggae scenes. Kay's vocals bring a smooth, soulful element to the band's music, adding depth and melody that complements the group's instrumental prowess. Rounding out the band is Jay Duckworth, whose multi-instrumental skills add versatility to the group's sound, allowing them to seamlessly blend ska, reggae, and punk influences. The A-side of the 7 features an upbeat track that highlights the band's ska roots, with Gittleman's basslines driving a lively groove, while McDermott's steady drumming and Duckworth's layered instrumentation create a tight, cohesive sound. Kay's vocals add a melodic touch, bridging the gap between the energetic rhythm section and the track's reggae undertones. The B-side offers a more introspective song, leaning into reggae's laid-back vibe with dub-inspired bass and echoing guitar riffs that create a relaxed, atmospheric feel. With members who have shaped and influenced their respective genres, the band's debut captures a blend of styles that reflects their collective history while offering something new for fans of ska, reggae, and punk.
