Eyes Light Up is the highly anticipated second album from critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Toby Sebastian. Since embracing independence, Toby has self-released a series of singles and an EP, steadily building a loyal fanbase. Last year, he completed a successful UK and EU tour, alongside a series of festival appearances.
Produced by Toby and Matty Benbrook (known for work with Paolo Nutini, Dido, and Jack Savoretti), Eyes Light Up was recorded at Studio 45 on Vyner Street in East London. The album features 12 tracks that take the listener on an emotional journey--ranging from heartfelt ballads to songs inspired by Toby's childhood heroes (Marvin Gaye, Marc Bolan, Trex, Bowie).
"Let's Pretend" is a poignant ode to the bittersweet reality of falling in love during challenging times, capturing the raw desire to escape with your lover, to be anywhere--or nowhere--together. Inspired by the turbulence of current world events, the track taps into a universal longing for connection.
"Heaven is the Backseat of a Rental Car" is a pop ballad with a driving melody that showcases Toby's growing ability to blend vulnerability with uplifting energy. The track carries echoes of Bowie and Bolan, blending introspective moments with an infectious sense of freedom.
The title track, "Eyes Light Up," draws influence from Paul Simon, John Martyn, and Nick Drake--a simple yet deeply emotional love song, carried by its soft, wistful melody.
"Why Did You Leave" marks a bold new direction for Toby, as he channels the soul influences of artists he grew up listening to, while "Oona" showcases a more rock-oriented side with influences from TRex and Marc Bolan and Terrance Trent Darby, giving an energy that adds a fresh layer to his evolving sound.
This album is a stunning showcase of the genre-bending style Toby has come to be known for, and it's no surprise he was hailed as 'one to watch' by Rolling Stone.
